View Full Version : Proper Bottle Service Etiquette
ChappStick 04-03-2008, 01:53 AM I am posting this thread because sometimes I realize that people who are new to the whole "Bottle Service" experience sometimes don't really know how to act. Yes you may be spending in upwards of 500 for a bottle of Alcohol that costs One Tenth the price at the corner "One Stop Liquor" but that is due to the fact that you are paying for Service. Security Service, Floor Cleaning Service, and Reserved Space Service. Now you need to realize that you need to be respectful of the person taking on the financial responsibility of the table ie "Credit Card and ID on File" . You need to make sure that he/she is compensated for their generosity. When I am a guest at a table I usually slip them a discreet bill and give them a simple thank you. The gesture will be appreciated and will let them know you are not a "Leech". And if you are paying for a table no matter how ridiculously wealthy you or your company is make sure that you make sure the ViP Hosts know that you will go elsewhere if you can find a better deal. I always like to make the Hosts Compete for my business.
Let the Host know you chose them over another.
If you want to slow your bottle down. Just put a cup over the top of it. This is a little Bottle Veteran Trick that says my bottle is capped no one can drink without my permission. For those who poured themselves a stiff drink have them refill it from the "Endless Carafe" of juice on the table.
**DO NOT ATTEMPT POURING IF YOUR A CLUMSY DRUNK*** No one like the person who knocks the 500 dollar bottle of GREY GOOSE off the table.
You can always ask the bottle service girl for some more lemons or lemon juice and make your lady friends some lemon drops.
So be cool. Be Comfortable. and Push the Envelope. :)
EngineerGuY 04-03-2008, 06:29 AM Great advice! Nothing beats bottle service!
vipHOST1 07-21-2009, 09:36 PM Hey check this out..the proper bottle service etiquette may be giving the person responsible for the tab some cash, but wouldn't you know the person, so i don't see the need of using the word "tipping". I don't understand that. It is nice to let your group know that you are no leech and that you can pull your own weight, i totally agree with that. Hey whats with not even mentioning of tipping the host. chappstick mentioned he likes to have the hosts compete for his business. HAHA we are talking about vegas right??? Any VIP HOST that works for a hot or new venue is honestly not gonna bargain deals on the phone with you just to get you to their venue. Any person wanting to bargain means that they are penny pinching and trying to save a buck, which means in "industry terms" no tip for the host and the bare minimum for the cocktail server..LAME..the best bet would to contact the host talk bottle minimums and not prices, look the prices up online if you have to. Talk money..let the host know you'll take care of them with a very good tip 200-300 or even more depending on the size of the party. The host will most likely then be willing to offer you some sweet bottle deals if not a better table in a better area of the club. If you take the others guys advice you'll have a table next to the exit door or bathroom and you wont have a security guard and you'll get a waitress that has already been informed that the host had a hard time on the phone with you and you sound cheap, therefore her attitude is set on what type of tip she may get, believe me this happens. Any host willing to bargain deals on the phone without a guarantee of a for sure tip out is a clear sign of a dead or slow venue. So tipping the host goes along way. So Always tip the host and most hosts will not walk you in until the tipped is received at the door, so have your money ready, don't be scrambling around arguing with your friends who didn't pitch in for the tip in front of the club, be ready and have cash in hand and do a proper handshake where the money is given. Take care of the security guard taking care of your section and cocktail server because you better believe the "vip host" does ask to see if they were taking care of. If they are not taken care of the host looks kinda bad for booking your cheap ass. This is bottle service people, this means you know that your paying for the area, service, privacy, and attention that your looking to get, so don't be cheap or else you will be next to the exit door behind a wall where nobody can see you. Have fun and be respectful to the staff as well as the people around you and always DRESS NICE..and always remember TIPPING is the key to proper bottle service etiquette.

please explain. I tipped my host $500 for a bad ass table, which I stole from someone, cause we didnt have a reservation.
I also tipped my bartender $200, because we had about 8 peeps drinking on the tab for about 5 hrs, and my tab was $38. Id loved to hear how he didnt deserve that. :D

Hmmm, I agree that you should take care of your host and stff but to not have a pointed conversation with the host about price I have to believe would set someone up to get hustled when they get there. Anyone agree or disagree?

Its why my friends make phone calls for me without hesitation. :D And its SO nice to have friends. Just ask the other forum members who were with me.

I agree with this, UNLESS its on a major holiday weekend or if it was the way dnix handled it without a ressie.....for instance, hypothetically speaking uejjap takes the approach that a host never deserves a tip of between 200-300 and he has a table that night and dnix comes along and says i dont have a ressie BUT Ill give you $500 to get a great table.....uejjap just lost his table, unfortunately thats the game....and like they say "dont hate the player hate the game" :D

Dnix is reffering to the best bartender on the planet. Imagine a bar 60' long 5 people deep all trying to get a drink and you get yours in less then 5 minutes. On top of that your grey goose and redbull cocktail is poured in a 12oz glass!

What i want to know is what bartender is this? 8 people drinking for 5 hours on a tab and its only $38.00? Ill gladly throw a huge tip to the bartender for that. Did you know her?

No problem. I didnt see the comment before about it being 5 people deep on a 60' bar. Im sure they wouldnt want that cat out of the bag ;)

Hmm sounds like I need to keep an open tab more often. I m usually worried that they will over charge me for drinks and I would have to argue with them at the end of the night :)

dont worry bout over charging its never happened to me EVER....I always run tabs with my cc and then pay with cash at the end cause this is the only way the bartender can hook it up by nonchalantly forgetting to punch it in the comp OR ringing in someone elses drink at the same time so not to appear as they are taking care of you.....everytime in my life when I run a tab it somes in under $100 and we drink an awful lot.

Do you tip when you hand the bartender the CC or afterwards when you pay???
Thanks

Great pointer! A round at Tryst runs about $24-30 anyway..so a missed drink here and there is a significant savings :)
nyc2vegas 07-22-2009, 10:08 AM at the end of the night when I pay is when I tip but I will drop a few bucks throughout the night to show that we will tip em.....but I do want to be clear that I have never done it at a top nightclub out in vegas. I typically do it at bars, but im sure at a top club it will save you a few bucks def!
nyc2vegas 07-22-2009, 10:20 AM Exactly... tables go to the highest bidder, and it's a gamble whether or not you will be "taken care of" to the same extent in return. You're paying for whatever you get... one way or another!
yeah but if you build a repoire with a guy your table will be rock solid, and if you take care of him once chances are the next time you need a favor it will be taken care of. the way I always look at it is the tip is usually split amongst a bunch of people which brings it down to about the cost of the cover, and youre just solidifying your stay in vegas.
Keebler 07-22-2009, 12:32 PM When you open the tab with the bartender and then pay in cash at the end do you tell them up front your going to pay with cash at the end of the night? or at the end be like oh im gonna pay cash?

either way!!!!! usually I just hand over the cc and then when I cloe it out I will tell the BT that Im gonna pay cash and they say no prob

Nice. that might be the best way to do it. My issue is my friends will always go over to the bartender and say their buying a drink on my tab when they should be paying for their own shit at the time... Assholes, lol

Just let them know up front that you'll cash out at the end but here's the CC to secure it.. Obviously if you start the process and the bar is slammed don't bother mentioning it to the bartender cause they're busy and will probably care less. Sometimes I'll be straight up and if I feel the bartender will hook me up I will hand over a cash tip up front and thank them for their services and let them know I appreciate it if they're able to hook me up and I'll hook them up some more. (obviously only do this if you know you're gonna be at the bar awhile and will be doing some drinking and give at least a $20 or $40 so they know you aren't bs'ing.)

In that case, let the bartender know that you've got a group with you, but noone is auth'd to order on your tab except for you. I've never had any difficulties with that.

What Erich says.. or get some new friends.
I'm always buying drinks for my friends anyway, but if they were just being shady like that without even asking or telling you that's a whole other story.

That sounds good. Ive tried doing that before in other cities and none of the bartenders seemed to care when other ordered drinks so it was kind of a lost cause.

Oh dont get me wrong, i love buying drinks for my friends and i do it all the time, but i do have those few "select" friends that will booze hound off my tab and think i dont know. Im not the type of guy to start things with them because im a nice guy, and i know im more more well off then they are so i kinda let it slide, might be my own fault, but i dont want to pay for their entire tab too ya know what i mean?

i vouch for DNIX. We had no problems getting into all of the spots we went to this weekend and were well taken care of.
I Didnt mention in my TR how many rounds of shots that were on the house and i cant even tell you how many times i went to the bar, didnt wait to get served when our connect saw me, and ordered mutiple drinks at a time and walked away. i tip heavy when i first meet my bartender and i never have a problem. and about the newbie, when i read his comments i thought of our "old friend". but now that i think about it he doesnt know who Chap is and doesnt know what a gangsta he is...if he sticks around he will figure it out.. I had a couple hour layover in Amsterdam once and the hardest thing I had to deal with was keeping my guys from hopping in cabs to check out the red light district. I recommend Spain to anyone thinking of it. Went out there for a buddy's wedding with my girl and spent some time in Barcelona which was awesome. Being in Barcelona required a lil more spanish than i could remember from high school but the locals appreciated my attempts to communicate to them in their language. I hear that if you go to Madrid they are a lil more English friendly but never been.

Thats exactly where I was planning to go. 2 days in Barcelona, then 5 days in Ibiza and 2 more days in Madrid. It was going to be cheaper to fly to Barcelona and then buying tickets with local commuter planes to go to another city.

Ah I see! If I m flying some where for a vacation destination, i'd like a good beach or pool party scene during the day. Kind of like a 2 for 1. I guess it wouldn't hurt to spend some days looking around and understanding history of places. I actually went to a gator lake when I was on spring break in Florida :)

Darryll 08-04-2009, 07:02 PM This is my first post on JC.com although i have been following his website and forum for a while and partied with him a few times.
I feel that the issue of tip needs to be discussed from a VIP Hosts point of view. With the exception of a few venues, most VIP Host are paid with a very small salary combined with a tip cut. All tips received by the venues VIP Hosts are collected together with the tips received from the Door Host. These figures are pooled over the course of the weekend, and given back at the end of the week. Most clubs use a point system to determine how much is given back. This being said, I have broken down basic standard by bottle min.
Straight Buys - min should be $50, and depending on how many bottles are purchased could be up to $1000
Any Free bottle - any time you are offered a "Get One Free", you should add $100 per free bottle to the gratuity for the host
Comps - If you get a free bottle with out being required to purchase anything, you should be tipping 60-100 per bottle to the host, 60-100 per bottle to the girl and 20 to the porter.
Remember that if a bottle is purchased, a 20% gratuity for the girl is added to the bill, but nothing is added for the host. If the table is a complete comp, then there is no bill , so the Host, cocktail girl and porter need a tip.
Lastly, this all goes out the door if its New Years Eve, Memorial Day, 4th of july, Valentines day, Labor Day, Halloween or a major fight weekend.

don.paulie 08-06-2009, 08:34 AM This kinda stuff scares crap out of me! It seems like you've to tip every last person you see an unknown amount that you should automatically just know.
For a complete newbie like me who comes from a place where you tip nobody, i'll need to be guided through it in baby steps.
So lets say it's a Friday night and me plus my 9 buddies (all guys) want to hit a club. What do we do and how much cash should I collect off them to cover all the necessary tipping plus bottles etc.
We're not cheap, I just honestly haven't a clue. Here in Ireland if you want a bottle you just ask the barman and pay the fixed price on display at the bar. The barman will even give you exact change back and not look for or expect a tip!

It all depends on which venue you pick, but lets use this generic formula.
9 guys = 3 bottles
1 bottle = (375 +20% gratuity and 7% sales tax) = 476.25
3 bottles = aprox 1500 if you include any hidden table fees or you get redbulls and waters.
I would tell each guy to bring 200, giving you 1800 to spend. That way you have 300 or so extra for tips as you see fit.
****This is a generic formula and not connected to any particular venue****
Mr.Vegas 08-07-2009, 03:53 AM I would tell each guy to bring 200, giving you 1800 to spend. That way you have 300 or so extra for tips as you see fit.
I would collect the money before heading out to the club ... we typically do this at the hotel before we pregame.
Keebler 08-07-2009, 08:49 AM Thats the easiest way, instead of at 4 AM and everyone is wasted at the table and no one can hear anything and your trying to do math = FAIL
Darryll 08-07-2009, 10:29 AM I would collect the money before heading out to the club ... we typically do this at the hotel before we pregame.
Yes, collect all the money before you enter the venue, esp if your paying cash. The worst thing for a cocktail server is waiting for 15 people to count out 2500 in 20's. If your putting a CC down, this way you know everyone can cover their end before you start drinking.
Mr.Vegas 08-08-2009, 05:44 PM Definitely is an epic FAIL so make sure collect like the IRS before you leave. Even doing the CC at the end, there are times where certain people take forever paying you back and you seem like a dick for asking them to pay you back ... the etiquette is lost.
