Whenever I go to Vegas, someone will ask me to bet on some sports team when I am down there. I just make the bet for them at MGM and bring the ticket back. So far anybody that I bought the tickets for, has not won.

I always wondered what if they did win? How would they claim the prize? Mail the ticket in?

Well I would if the event had ended before I left Vegas... I don't know much about sports, but I think these are bets on who is going to win championships and stuff like that.

Thats funny, I was talking to my tax attorney about that recently. In Macau, the casinos there are one of the few that allow side bets. In Vegas, side bets are definitely illegal and only way to cash out is to really make your own bets and then transfer the funds to them at a later time. So keep it on the DL, or not do it at all. Or go to Macau, its only 30 mins from Hong Kong in China :)

Yes, you mail in the ticket. I placed a bet on a game that was weeks after I left vegas. On the back of the ticket it tells you how to mail it. A few weeks later MGM sent me a check in the mail.

You can mail it in. Most of my friends will make some pretty longshot bets on favorite teams. The idea behind it, if one of the longshots actually hits, they HAVE to go back to Vegas to cash it in, and the money they made will conveniently cover part of the trip. :)

actually its illegal no matter what but doesnt matter unless you get caught........and then as long as you dont talk youll be fine :D

If your making a long term bet (like whos going to win the NBA championship or something like that) and you get the betting ticket when your in Vegas all you do is mail in the winning ticket and they mail you back the check. Thats all.

Same thing happens with chips. If you leave Vegas with chips (like you forgot you had them) you can mail them back and they will mail you a check.

Its as simple as that.
