View Full Version : Dive, off strip, Bars......
ricky_clemons 01-27-2010, 02:54 PM Surely there are some people on here who go to bars other than those inside the casinos and don't go to clubs EVERY night.
Curious to see what are some of the favorite dive and off strip bars are.
Personally, I like the Artisan (fun crowd), the Double Down, Dino's between downtown and the strip and the Griffin (sp?) up on Fremont East.
You're missing out if you haven't checked out the Artisan or Karaoke at Dino's. Refreshing change of pace. Double down, well it just freaking rules.
nyc2vegas 01-27-2010, 03:04 PM ive always wanted to check out the artisan, it looks like a great place
SDGonzo 01-27-2010, 03:40 PM Dunno if it qualifies as a "dive", but for off-strip bars - Ellis Island. Excellent, cheap beer.
Ooh, or for more of a local vibe - Beauty Bar.
Cisco419 01-27-2010, 03:56 PM The thing with me is there's tons of dive bars out here that I go to so dont really care for them out in Vegas. But I'd assume that if I went for like 10 days or something like that I'd probly throw in a dive bar or two.

+1 cant imagine looking for a "change of pace" in Vegas. That defeats the purpose of why I went in the first place. We have bars with cheap beer in Houston, and its even cheaper in your hotel room.
If I just cant muster up the energy to go to a club, Ill gamble or sleep. :D
ricky_clemons 01-27-2010, 08:46 PM I understand that most people don't go to Vegas for "dive" bars. But, I spend 15-20 nights a year in Vegas and don't care to do a club every night. Sometimes, it's nice to just go somewhere and have a few drinks that isn't in a casino.
Also, a place like the Double Down certainly isn't somewhere that you see very many places. I like checking out some of the off the beaten path places. They are also great to know for late night drinks, pre going out drinks and for drinking during the afternoon.
My first 15-20 trips (I've been about 40-45 times now) I was strictly club, club, club, club and never left the strip. As I've gotten older and visited more times, I've found that there is a TON more that Vegas has to offer.
I people would be real pleased/surprised with some of the places they'd find if they'd go off the grid every now and then. I mean, I can only go to BodyTryBankTao so many times before it gets a bit redundant. Yanno?
Hoping for some locals to chime in here.
I'm actually surprised this thread hadn't been made yet. I've been to some dives in Henderson and some dives in Laughlin. Never have a car in Las Vegas so it's hard to make it too far from The Strip.

I actually tried the thread once a while ago. But, it didn't go very far. So, I thought I'd try again.
Got any names for the places you've been?
Hey Ricky,
i'm down to explore the off-strip/dive bar scene with you in March. let's drink away.

Yeah a friend told me about that place. They've got barbecues going on as well apparently? Sounds pretty good to me, think I'll probably head there at some point.
jwurts4 01-29-2010, 11:13 AM A guy at work swears "Main Street Station" downtown is the bomb. He said that they are a micro-brewhouse. He said that you can get a sampler of all 7 beers (6 ozs) for like $5. They have awesome apps and oyster shooters. I am gonna hit it up sometime Feb 11-14. I will report back if it is worth the trip downtown.

I'd like to clarify that Laughlin itself could be considered a dive! It's like old people gone wild! :D My favorite was the time a friend and I went down and were sitting at a (wheelchair height) bar. I look over to my left and see these two cotton-head 80 year old women. It seriously felt like I automatically was supposed to issue a standard pickup line or something the way we are sitting - except they were 80.
The bartender IDs us (my friend and I, not them, obviously) and says "you guys are from Vegas? What the hell are you doing here?!" Cotton head # 1 chimes in "Veeeegass?! I used to go to Veeegasss all the time! We'd go down there to get drunk and screw!!"
She then proceeded to tell us how many times she would get pulled over by a cop for driving that 90 mile desert stretch drunk. He would tell her to sleep it off on the side of the road, but she would just wait till he got back in his car and then yell "Fuuuuck you!" before peeling out. Her words, seriously.
RIGHT AFTER her story about telling the cops to fuck off, I look over to the dance floor and see an equally old lady sitting in a motorized scooter fist pumping the air screaming "wooooo!" It was like the twilight zone.
Another time I see this lady die of a heart attack on a slot machine. She was seriously slumped over on the call attendant button. Medics roll in, wheel her and her oxy tank out, and then another old woman IMMEDIATELY swoops in on her machine like a bird finding a prime spot on a telephone wire. Classic. haha
IndyColtsGal 01-29-2010, 08:25 PM :D Loved that story Jack, especially the fist pumping twilight zone scene.
I didn't see anyone mention the Green Door.:p
nyc2vegas 01-30-2010, 07:46 AM im pissing myself right now!!!!!!!!!!
Im trying to figure out why you have MULTIPLE stories at this place??????????
laughed out loud at the old people stories!
hmm, i don't know any dive bars off the strip, but usually every trip i go to a japanese restaurant that's kind of a dive across from HR for drinks and sushi.

I like the way you think!

Didnt try the BBQ at EI, but it smelled awesome. Opted for the Prime Rib instead which was really good and a great value. MUST get the American Casino Guide as they had multiple coupons for EI, including BOGO on food, and four free drinks....although at $1.50 for a 20oz draft, felt kinda silly even using the free drink coupons, lol. They also have $5 BJ, but only like two tables.

Don't like to drive?
Don't like to drive?
Usually someone with a more reliable car is the one driving. And said people don't usually like going off the strip.
Went to an off strip bar with Chapp, Lady Chapp, Colton and Loves (and others). It was nice to actually get a well crafted mix drink from a bartender in Vegas for a change.
