View Full Version : Jobs in Las Vegas
tangoplus 07-22-2009, 05:13 AM Okay, so I've been toying with the idea of maybe moving to Vegas. Of course I would probably end up blowing all my savings after a few months.. so eventually I would have to find a job.
Where's a good place to job hunt? Perferablely online. :)
Which sector is growing? Is it a good idea to work for a casino/hotel?
Speak freely!
Keebler 07-22-2009, 05:55 AM The hotel industry has been cutting back mainly as a whole, but im not sure if Vegas is really affected. From what i know in my industry Vegas tourism is still down quite a bit from its regular numbers, but its still bringing people in, its not hurting that badly. Im sure theres Vegas sites out there for jobs, but i dont know them off hand. Ill look into it.
nyc2vegas 07-22-2009, 07:16 AM vegas is hurting bad....citycenter is bascially the only thing hiring and I just wouldnt trust them because theyve been pushing back dates left and right and there are bigtime rumors floating arund about mgmmirage(the investor). BUT when this shakes out and the "turn" starts there will be alot of opportunity.
tschwicht 07-22-2009, 07:38 AM I'd be interested to hear more on this as well. In about 5 months my lease is up in Chicago, and i'm debating going out west. Hopefully some locals can chime in.
If I went, Id try to get a job as a host. There pulling $100-$1000 cash every time the seat someone.

That would be ideal. The question is, how do you make that happen.
If they need a guy with a background in weapons/tactics along with some sales and higher education experience i'm their man!

You would have to start somewhere as a Jr. host, and start to develop a strong clientele. In the mean time, you would probably be seating clients for the Sr. host.
Keebler 07-22-2009, 08:40 AM I wouldnt do anything with City Center right now. I work in the industry on hotel building and development and they arent paying any of their deposits. Lots of talk of MGM going under. We wont release anything to them without money, thats how bad its getting.

My friend's dad (many of you met this friend the past weekend) was actually just laid off from some projects on that out there a few months ago. Hopefully it turns around soon for them.

yeah there was a thread on it here, supposedly MGM is in it deep, I would be shocked if citycenter actually opened

I used to be in the Army. Not anymore. No Rambo here :)
Now I work for a college advising students in the military.

Im right there with ya. I dont think its going too. Interesting idea, but its stalling. The Cosmo will be open way before and that a huge project too.

yeah JC got alot of pressure from wall street about that section and mgmmirage sent him a cease and desist letter because of the rumors cited, so he had to pull it

I still wish I picked up LVS at $1.38!
masterdeviance 07-23-2009, 11:24 AM I recall us discussing buying Circus Circus outright for $200. MGM Mirage should have seriously considered that offer lol
Keebler 07-23-2009, 11:59 AM I remember i stumbled upon one of those conversations and i was like "my head hurts too much to try and even figure out what is going on right now" haha.

You couldnt pay me to take Circus Circus
sydneygirl 07-23-2009, 06:33 PM Is everywhere in the US that bad at the moment?
I've been toying with the idea of moving over there - my dad is american so no visa problems. Am i better off waiting for 12 months or so till employment market gets better?
Prob wouldn't live in vegas though, i don't wanna be that far from a beach.
KC2Vegas 07-23-2009, 06:35 PM well housing is cheap right now perfect time to buy if you have a job.
Keebler 07-23-2009, 06:41 PM Depending on where you go, the housing will still be going down (Vegas and Miami are the worst right now). I say wait the 12 months.

Good to know. I'm still paying off a place here, so wouldn't be in a hurry to buy one there anyway. Have been thinking more along the lines of heading over, giving it 12 months and then decide i i wanna stay. I work in travel (for an airline) and bartend as well & I assume as they're both industries that rely on discretionary spending it wouldn't be easy getting work right now.
nyc2vegas 07-23-2009, 07:54 PM youre gonna see houses starting to move now but prices still have a way to go before they stabilize Q210 is when you will start to see positive signs......assuming healthcare doesnt get socialized!
id wait 3yrs
nyc-you should start a debate thread about current politics. it will be the most jc has ever contributed to a thread. lol

It's funny - I was reading an article about, I think, the Phoenix housing market where because the housing prices are advertised so low, many renters and on-the-fence new home buyers are actually bidding up the prices of some homes, causing another mini-housing bubble.
As for 2nd quarter in 2010? That might be an optimistic outlook considering that the economy's laying on a mountain of debt - personal & federal - that should crunch whatever stabilization has been. The only reason Wall St's had a bit of recovery this week was due to the equivalent of an empty gain - cost-cutting (i.e. JOBS)
sydneygirl 07-23-2009, 08:25 PM Thanks for the advice guys, will probably reassess in 12 months.
Our economy isn't great right now, but you guys seem to be a lot worse off.
If I could eventually get another airline job over there with a carrier that flies into vegas i'd be a very happy kid :)

might be wishful thinking but real estate is the foundation of our economy and once we wash through all the foreclosures we will start to see a turn, we would have been very close to being done with them but our douchebag politicians placed moratoriums on foreclosure actions which simply delayed the inevitable. Im confident though that quarter 2 will see positive signs and build confidence, until then you will see your dead cat bounces and profit takers gone wild.
nyc2vegas 07-23-2009, 08:30 PM not as passionate as him, I assure you.
ahhhhh shit I can never hang at a JC table with him.....nah Im very passionate I actually spend hours on end writing letters to politicians debating them....peple think im completely insane....I might just have to start a political thread :D

I give him a hard time. I periodically send him Obama jokes. I even searched everywhere for a NOBAMA shirt or bumper sticker to give him last weekend. Can you believe I coulnt find one here? I guess it became disrespectful now that hes the pres. JC takes it well. Its easy for us to get along on the subject, cause I didnt vote for McCain or Obama. I thought they both sucked.
Mr.Vegas 07-23-2009, 08:39 PM The economy has really did a number on both CA and Nevada ... although if you search in any job search engines, the City Center is hiring right now for multiple positions.

first question should be "when will I actually start"

yo vanilla 07-24-2009, 08:24 AM I also thought obama and mccain both sucked. still do. And I don't spend hours writing politicians, but I do spend some time. I wrote my congressman 3 times the week they voted on cap and trade, and since then twice about the unhealthcare bill.
